The Earth Sciences Student Colloquium is a one-day conference organized by Earth Science graduate students that showcases student research relating to the fields of geography, geology, GIS, paleoecology, snow science, paleontology and related disciplines. This year, our event takes place on April 13, and will feature oral presentations given by students throughout the university, a GIS panel, silent auction, poster session and social hour, and end with a banquet dinner and a keynote address by Doug Chabot, Director of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center.
Save the date! The 12th Annual Earth Sciences Colloquium will be held on Thursday, April 13, 2017. Join us for a day of student presentations, skill-building workshops, and a judged academic poster competition. We’ll end the day with a celebratory banquet featuring a keynote speaker on cutting-edge Earth Science research. The conference is free and open to the public. A call for abstracts to present at the Colloquium will be released in early 2017. Visit this website for more updates and announcements.

We’re excited to introduce Dr. Greg Stock, the first-ever Yosemite National Park Geologist, as our 2016 Keynote Speaker this year! Dr. Stock’s main research interests are primarily in geomorphology and include river dynamics, rock fall and debris flows, and glacial erosion. Take a look at this interview where he describes John Muir’s influence on his research.
We are busy preparing for the 11th Annual Earth Sciences Colloquium to be held on Thursday, April 21, 2016. Stay tuned for more information regarding events and speakers. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us!
Have you signed up for your mock interview with Mel Bechberger yet? Mel is a Senior Geologist at ConocoPhillips and a Montana State alumna. On Thursday, April 30th, from Noon to 1:00 PM she will give a talk focusing on valuable interview tips. Following her talk, she is available for mock interviews. The interviews are an excellent opportunity to practice, evaluate what works well and not so well in both industry and academic interviews (you have the option of choosing which you’d like to experience), and receive feedback from Mel. Mel will also review your resume, so be sure to bring that with you!
Mock interviews will be held between 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM in 121 Traphagen. To sign up, head over to the Earth Sciences main office or email email@example.com for available interview times.
This is a great opportunity, and we are grateful Mel is so willing to help us out!
